Trip Informations
Travel from coast to coast and through the heart of southern Africa on a 49-day overland journey. Begin in beautiful Cape Town and voyage through desert landscapes, rolling savannas and lush mountainscapes. Cruise lakes and delta waterways and feel the spray of massive waterfalls. Spend time getting to know locals in rural villages and enjoying the buzzing city rhythms. From game drives in national parks full of iconic animals to enjoying the simple pleasure of lying on a pristine beach, this grand journey is the perfect way to discover everything that makes this part of the world so special.
Why you’ll love this trip
With included wildlife viewing experiences like game drives, tracking walks and safaris, you are guaranteed to encounter a diverse array of Africa’s iconic wildlife.
Wake up before dawn and scramble to the top of a massive Sesriem dune for a dramatic sunrise view across a vast sea of undulating sand.
Glide down Botswana's Okavango Delta on a mokoro, with a local at the helm using a pole to guide your journey through the rich waterways.
Discover the largest ruins in sub-Saharan Africa – Great Zimbabwe. This World Heritage-listed site dates back to the 11th century.
Chill out on the white sands of Zanzibar’s northern beaches and spend a night exploring the ornate alleyways of Stone Town.
Is this trip right for you?
No two journeys in Africa are identical. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days. Be prepared for travel times to be longer or shorter than advised. Weather and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the detours, shortcuts, and unforgettable moments along the way.
This is a participatory overland camping trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your tent, helping out with camp chores, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of iconic African wildlife. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page at tuuur.com/africa/overland.
Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You'll be briefed on arrival.
The day-to-day itinerary features a selection of optional activities. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and is intended only as a guide. Prices are approximate and may change at the discretion of the local provider. All activities are subject to availability.

The African overland tour was fantastic - a wonderful way to see authentic Africa and the majestic animals that wander Mother Africa. Remember, summer is rainy season & it does rain, sometimes torrentially! Be prepared for some rough roads, remember, you are in Africa! Our guide, OG, was full of knowledge & we soaked it all in. Our driver, Steve, was a very good driver, showing us he cared about our safety & respected the vehicle. Ibrim, our cook, made the best soup ever! I will forever cut my onions & tomatoes the way he showed me. I loved shopping for our food at the road-side stands. Thank you for a very memorial trip across southern Africa.

The tour description is clear this is not a 5 star luxury tour but if you want to experience the countries first hand, learn about the people, politics, history and see some spectacular wildlife then you cannot go wrong. The tour team were exceptional in their organisation and knowledge

This short section of what was the vic Falls to Gorillas trip for me was incredible. The Serengeti is insane, our time spent here with the big cats was extraordinary. Simon, our chef made us delicious 5 star home cooked meals every day 3 times a day, so after a long day of game drives we knew we were coming back to a delicious feast. The 9 days on this leg were jam packed, but incredible.

A fantastic trip sure to test ones tolerance at times but well worth it.To travel with like minded people through all these countries and see so many amazing things is an experience of a lifetime. Our group had an age range of 76 to 30 and everyone contributed to an exciting adventure. At times you will be out of your comfort zone but those dusty days, bumpy roads, lack of a hot shower, early morning starts are made worthwhile with some incredible sights of scenery ,people, and animals
