This trip involves travel on public transport, covering long distances and consequently some long days of travel. Long-distance and overnight trains can often be delayed and occasionally cancelled due to heavy fog between December and February. Some patience will go a long way towards your enjoyment here. Sit back, relax and watch the scenery go by – a book or podcast doesn’t go astray.

We do our best to estimate travel times, but these can often change. That's just how it is in these parts and as a result, there's not as much free or independent time as on some other trips.

Nepal and north India can get surprisingly cold in winter, please be prepared and pack accordingly. Speaking of the weather, it also has the potential to be very hot, depending on the season. Please make sure you check seasonal weather guides and pick a travel time that suits your comfort level.

We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Tuuur style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from Western standards.

I believe that the reason I enjoyed the trip as much as I did was because of how safe I felt with our guide, Javed. I have never been to India and Nepal before and while they were incredible countries to experience, it was initially shocking to be there. Once I met our guide and he took charge, I felt like I could actually relax and enjoy everything the countries had to offer. He was an incredible guide, he was very knowledgeable, always providing very thorough briefs on the next day’s activities, and attentive to everyone’s needs. 10/10
Some hotels offered water in glass bottles, refilled from the big blue 5 gallon dispensers, which was great. The number of plastic water bottles we used was very high but having the glass water bottles did help offset a bit. Plastic water bottles were available to buy everywhere, all the time.
The hotels generally were great. Laundry services were available at many of our hotels and I took advantage of it on three separate occasions. The laundry was very affordable and the clothes always came back perfectly folded. In one instance one of my pants still had some dirt on them but I just used a damp towel to wipe and everything came clean. The only hotel wich left a horrible impression was the one in Delhi, Hotel Magic Tree. The room was incredibly dirty which I initially overlooked. But after being in the room for an hour or so, a mouse ran across the floor. I immediately reported it to the front desk and requested a room change. The hotel management did not want to change my room but an Intrepid guide stepped in to help and the hotel eventually change our room to a cleaner and better one.
The hotel in Orchha, Raj Mahal, was fantastic (the grounds especially!!). Also the Lumbini Buddha Garden Hotel was lovely (again, the grounds really stood out and it was also a very clean room). The Royal Park Hotel Wildlife Resort was wonderful (the grounds were absolutely fantastic and the breakfast was wonderful, though the room was not very clean). Finally, the Hotel Moonlight in Kathmandu was a STAR. The breakfast was by far the best out of the whole trip, the room was amazing, the garden seating for meals was wonderful, and the rooftop was breathtaking especially at night.
Javed helped organize the meals for us as a group and his restaurant recommendations were always fantastic. He joined us for all meals, walking with us to the restaurant, or having us place our order in advance so that meals would be ready at a certain time, giving us time for other activities rather than sitting and waiting for the food to be prepared. (Service for a larger group was a little slow at times so Javed was fantastic at time management, helping us make the most of every day.)
The train transportation on this trip was fantastic. The only people who struggled were the major overpackers who brought very large suitcases. The buses we used were always spacious and comfortable. I found that having some hand sanitizer and most importantly, toilet paper at all times was very important. Most public toilets did not have any toilet paper or soap. The overnight train toilet wasn’t amazing but usable for the two times I had to pee. Again toilet paper and hand sanitizer were a must. Bathroom breaks throughout the trip were well timed. I always had a bathroom when I needed one. I didn’t develop any major stomach issues (nothing that wasn’t resolved after taking a dose of Imodium which I had to do on two separate occasions.)
The sightseeing activities were all INCREDIBLE. Truly, the locations we visited were fantastic. You are required to take shoes and socks off at many sites and temples. I packed wipes which I used on my feet before putting shoes back on at these sites. The floors were not clean and if it had rained recently, were also wet. The days that were mostly designated for travel, where we were sitting on busses or trains, felt a little sedentary. Personally, I made extra time in the mornings to stretch or go for a walk (in the areas where it felt safe to do so). I would have personally preferred a slightly higher level of activity but the trip itinerary allowed us to experience so many aspects of life in India and Nepal which I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.
One thing I did during this trip which I believe enhanced my experience was wearing a mask most days and doing a nightly sinus rinse. The pollution and smog was ever-present. Some people on the trip developed coughs and other respiratory issues (nothing major, just some discomfort). I felt that a mask and a sinus rinse helped me stay healthy and physically strong.
Two hotels had pools - a bathing suit would be good to pack!! I had trouble finding one to buy. The trip packing list only said to pack one if you are going to the south of India which we were not doing so I did not bring one and regretted it.
