Trip Informations
Explore the Guatemalan Highlands on this seven-day adventure starting and ending in Antigua. See the shamanic ceremonies devoted to San Simon, visit Chichicastenango market and ride in a brightly coloured chicken bus. Relax on the shores of Lake Atitlan, take in the views of volcanos and Spanish buildings and maybe learn about the rich Mayan culture through an optional cooking class. Take a scenic boat road to the shamans that guard the shrine of Maximon, hear about the daily life of the many locals you’ll meet along the way and discover why this culture holds the chain-smoking deity in such high regard.
Why you’ll love this trip
Visit San Andres Itzapa and see the shamanic ceremonies devoted to San Simon – a popular chain-smoking saint that has stolen the hearts of the Maya people.
Ride in a decorated chicken bus to a local market and see the larger-than-life vegetables this region’s known for – decide for yourself whether it’s the result of the fertilizer or the blessings from God.
Visit Chichicastenango market and pick up your very own huipils (a traditional Maya garment worn by women and girls) or some handmade jade jewellery.
Take a scenic boat ride on Lake Atitlan to Santiago Atitlan. With 95 per cent of the population of Maya descent, you’ll learn about the region’s rich culture and meet the shamanic keepers of Maximon.
Join your local leader on an orientation walk through Antigua. By starting and ending your trip here, you’ll be sure to see the city’s restored Spanish buildings and epic views of the volcano that towers over it.
Is this trip right for you?
The tropical climate of Central America means conditions can be really hot and humid. Always carry plenty of water with you and stay hydrated, especially on walking tours.
While your leaders on this trip will bridge any language gaps you have along the way, you'll find meeting locals easier the more Spanish words you know. Attempting to communicate in Spanish is a great way of showing you care.

Heart of Guatamala was a wonderful trip to see Guatamala. We had a small group of 8 plus the guide and the guide, Juan, was wonderful. Lovely accommodations. Great communication. Knowledge of everything was outstanding. Guatemala was beautiful. I will definitely do more adventures with Intrepid.

It's worth taking this trip! Guatemala is stunningly beautiful and the people are kind, friendly, and don't hassle you at all. This trip rewards an open mind and wonderfully mixes very busy urban scenes with remote splendour. There's plenty of time to relax in peaceful, fascinating environments, and plenty of time to take in the multivaried expressions of this rich culture, whether in the little towns or bigger cities.

The Guatemala Highlands trip was fabulous for me. The leader was perfect, knowledgable , approachable , helpful , fun and an all round good person. The volcanic landscapes were beyond my expectations. The UNESCO heritage site of Antigua was such an incredible place being still a genuine living community and in the most amazing volcanic surroundings. Overall the trip was a wonderful experience made all the better by the group members and Marlon the leader .

Our tour guide Sergio in Guatemala was absolutely wonderful. He was upbeat and engaging, and his love for his country truly shone throughout our time with him. I especially appreciated that he was local—his perspective added depth and authenticity to everything we experienced. He was very personable, sharing just the right amount of personal stories, which made the tour feel human and meaningful rather than scripted. His sense of humor kept the atmosphere light and enjoyable, and he had a rare ability to always step into our shoes, never judging and always meeting us with empathy and understanding. This was more than just a tour—it felt like being shown Guatemala through the eyes of someone who genuinely cares about it and about the people he guides. I highly recommend Sergio.

Reyes was the best tour guide we’ve ever had! He went above and beyond at all times! When we would get into the tour bus, most tour leaders would just sit down and ride the bus, but not Reyes, he would stand up and give us more information about the local culture, which we really appreciate it! His enthusiasm and general personality was amazing! I would consider any other tour if he was the leader! We had the best time! I went with my husband and my two sons and we all agree. Reyes was amazing! We will definitely hire Intrepid again for future tours!
