Trip Informations
Take in the highlights of sun-kissed Portugal on a seven-day sightseeing adventure from Porto to Lisbon. Taste port in its birthplace, explore riverfront Coimbra, and weave through the verdant countryside all the way to the capital. From the coastal sites of Nazare to the medieval town of Obidos and a traditional Fado show, you’ll be experiencing the best of Portugal’s arts and culture. Oh yes – they have pretty good custard tarts, too. Put Portugal on your itinerary today with a small-group journey that gets you to the places you need to see.
Why you’ll love this trip
Take a walk through the idyllic coastal city of Porto and understand why the birthplace of fortified wine is renowned for its narrow lanes, charming buildings and delicious cuisine.
Explore the country’s oldest university when discovering the historic riverfront city of Coimbra – once the capital of Portugal.
Take a walk through the idyllic coastal city of Porto and understand why the birthplace of fortified wine is renowned for its narrow lanes, charming buildings and delicious cuisine.
Take in all the highlights of Portugal’s arts and culture scene with an included traditional Fado show in Coimbra.
Check out the fishermen district in the coastal town of Nazaré, home to the iconic brightly painted wooden boats, narrow cobblestone lanes, and the traditional sete saias–clad women who keep the village’s maritime heritage alive.
Join your leader in Lisbon, where you’ll wander through historic neighborhoods, soak in sweeping hilltop views, and savor the city’s beloved pastéis de nata, still warm and caramelized from the oven.
Explore Coimbra – once the capital of Portugal, where medieval streets wind past ancient monasteries, riverfront gardens, and plazas filled with the soft sound of fado echoing through the old town.
Is this trip right for you?
Please keep your luggage as small and light as possible. You'll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You'll need to be able to lift your luggage into storage racks, walk across cobblestone streets with it and carry it up and down stairs.
Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be extreme in Portugal (over 40°C/100°F), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water.
If you have more time to explore the region or can't find a suitable date for this trip, you may want to check out our other trips in the region, such as 'Explore Spain & Portugal' (trip code ZMSI), or 'Madrid to Marrakech (trip code ZMSH) which continues on into Morocco.

The Premium Portugal trip was fantastic with centrally located hotels and comfortable transport. Our delightful and engaging tour leader, Clara, was very knowledgeable about each city we visited. Highlight was the Douro Valley - wine tour, feature stay and boat trip. All fabulous! I really like the small group concept as well as the mix of activities and free time that Intrepid trips offer. There is lots of walking if you want to make the most of places visited.

Loved this trip in Portugal, particularly visiting the lesser-known Nazare, Coimbra, and Obidos, it was great to see more outside of Porto and Lisbon. I walked loads, ate loads, enjoyed the delicious wine and port - all in wonderful company and with a great tour leader in Diogo. Highly recommend!

Had an amazing trip with small tour group of eight people. Shared a lot of laughs and made some great memories along our way. Our leader, Gerardo, did a fantastic job taking us on the tour and recommending things to do on our free time. Totally recommend Gerardo if planning your next trip to Portugal!

This was my third trip with intrepid, and they did not disappoint. Painless booking, excellent local trip leaders, small groups, ideal for a single woman traveler. I will travel with them again and again.

This was a GREAT trip. The hills are real so there is a baseline of fitness to consider. Arriving a day early was a great move and highly suggested if possible. The best Tour Leader.

Loved our Highlights of Portugal trip and we were so glad we still got to visit the Serra do Acor mountain area - great that Intrepid has continued to support tourism there after the bushfires!
