Trip Informations
The kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayas sits between two spiritual hubs – Tibet and India – and is one of Asia’s best-kept secrets. On this active adventure, you’ll discover there is no better way to explore it than on foot as you hike through country that’s full of protected forest, so it absorbs more carbon than it uses. Feel closer to enlightenment as you hike along the restored Trans Bhutan Trail which will immerse you in the past, present and future. Uncover Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage on a journey that explores forested valleys, fortified monasteries and sacred mountains on your own two feet and discover the beauty of its people, landscape and culture with a local leader who will help you unlock its secrets.
Why you’ll love this trip
Take in panoramic views of the Himalayas from the Dochula Pass, which sits more than 3000 m above sea level and is home to many fluttering prayer flags.
Hike along the Divine Madman Trail, believed to be a trail followed by Drukpa Kuenley – a famous Buddhist monk, missionary and poet who came to Bhutan from Tibet.
Explore the country’s biggest Dzong (a complex of fortified buildings which served as a Buddhist school) in Trongsa at the end of your hike from Chendebji.
Wander around the remote, lush and beautiful Tang Valley and Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), famous for being one of the most serene places in Bhutan to meditate.
Journey to Taktsang, commonly known as the Tiger's Nest – a small monastery clinging to a rocky cliff 900 m above the valley floor – and soak in its magnificence.
Is this trip right for you?
This is trip spends time at altitude; you should refer to the Medical & Health Information for this trip to understand the risks.
Please read packing list available on Essential Trip document carefully and make sure you bring all necessary items.
Despite Bhutan being a small country, you'll experience long travel days as most roads are single lane. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
While it’s legal to consume imported meat, the slaughtering of animals for consumption within Bhutan is banned, therefore delicious veggie dishes are varied and bountiful at every meal.
Please be aware that hot water is limited in some places. Speaking of all things heated, the Bhutanese love chilli and the food can be a touch spicy.
All meals are included due to the nature of travelling in Bhutan. This means there may be limited choices on some days.

Amazing way to experience Bhutan in various different ways: hiking through enchanting, wild forest, getting close to locals to understand how people live and what beliefs drives them in their daily lives, learning the intricate stories of local Buddhism, witnessing how locals spend leisure time, and be reminded of the value of living sustainably, caring for this beautiful world!

An extraordinary trip from start to finish. Bhutan is an incredibly interesting country with beautiful scenery and rich culture that is preserved in such an authentic and values driven way. The trekking was varied, at times challenging but very doable and hugely rewarding. Tiger’s Nest was incredible as were the temples and historical sites we saw along the way. Our guides, Robin and Rinzin were excellent, amazing knowledge and were very supportive. Great food & accommodation. I would 100% recommended this trip!

Our trip to Bhutan was absolutely unforgettable. Robin and assistant guide Rinzin went out of their way to make every moment special — kindhearted, funny, and entertaining throughout the journey. Bhutan itself is breathtakingly beautiful, and the trip offered the very best of both its stunning landscapes and rich cultural experiences. Thanks as well to our driver Kezang, who kept us safe on the roads and thoughtfully welcomed us with tea and cookies after our hikes. This was truly one of my favorite travel memories ever.

Excellent journey learning about Bhutan’s history, customs and environmental policies as well as Gross National Happiness policies while hiking sections of the Trans Bhutan Trail and exploring temples, villages, etc. Our guide Robin and assistant guide, Rinzin, made this trip memorable. Highly recommend this trip of a lifetime.

This was a wonderful trip, a good balance between physical activity and culture. Lots of scenic hiking blended with temples, and traditional fortresses. The guides were really excellent, knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic. They really conveyed what it meant to be Bhutanese.

If you are reasonably fit, I fully recommend this trip. It has a perfect combination of walking/hiking and sightseeing of cultural sites. Be prepared for some uphill climb and (especially) downhill walk. Mountains are a big part of Bhutan and I you miss a lot if you do not experience it. We were very lucky with our group, and our guide, assistant guide and driver. Robin made a huge effort to transmit his knowledge and love for his country, so I can not praise him and thank him enough. Big thanks also to Rinzin, who provided excellent support during the hiking and complemented the information about Bhutan and is a very talented painter, and to Mr K. who drove us safely in not easy roads during the whole trip. After many Intrepid Trips, I can say that this is is the best.

An unforgettable trekking experience in Bhutan—stunning landscapes, rich culture, and a true sense of being off the grid in the best way. What made the trip stand out, though, was our leader, Sangay Dubjur. His knowledge, energy, and constant attention to the group were exceptional. He handled everything—from logistics to some challenging group dynamics—with calm professionalism and never let it impact the overall experience. If you’re considering this trip, know that having a guide like Sangay makes all the difference.
