Why you’ll love this trip
Get out and see a different side to the South Island, making the most of the wide-open spaces of the rugged and largely unexplored West Coast.
Go deeper into the history of the area with stories of the goldrush days during visits to Reefton, Kumara.
Take in the magic of the spectacular Fox Glacier region weaving through rainforests and a walk along shimmering Lake Matheson.
Witness the stunning, millions of years old scenery at the dramatic Pancake Rocks and the Hokitika Gorge, and spot fur seals at Cape Foulwind.
Is this trip right for you?
With seven days in the lesser visited regions of the South Island, you’ll have time to visit places others don’t.
This trip involves some walking over varied terrain and is best suited to travellers with a good level of mobility. Details on physical activities can be found in the itinerary.
This trip is the first part of a combination of 2 trips. Some of your fellow travellers may continue on in Queenstown. Please see our 'New Zealand South Island Adventure' (trip code PHSQC) for details.
Itinerary
Cross the Southern Alps into rugged, untamed coastal territory
Explore the narrow strip of South Island land sandwiched between the mountains and the Tasman Sea that’s home to some of the country’s most beautiful places. Millions of years of natural history are right in front of you in wild limestone rock formations, powerful glaciers, rushing rivers and surf pounded coast, while the much more recent stories of the gold and coal rush can be found in the heritage settlements and in the resolute spirit of the coasters. Take in highlights from Christchurch to Queenstown, Pancake Rocks to craft gin, kayaking to spa soaking. This is a coastal road trip to rival any other.

I highly recommend this trip - you will love it! I wish that it was longer and I regret not signing up for the longer tour (going to Catlins and Stewart Island). I had an amazing time with a wonderful group of 11 of us total. Our guide Connor was outstanding, really thoughtful about our itinerary, making sure to maximize our experiences. You will be lucky if you can have Connor as your guide - the guide can really make a huge difference. I went in October and it was not crowded in any of the areas we went, which was great! There is a lot of driving but it doesn't feel like it because you're seeing beautiful scenery the entire time and there's plenty of stops for bathroom, coffee, lunch, scenic walks. I really enjoyed Wanaka and liked having 2 days there. Fox Glacier and Franz Josef were great too - I definitely recommend the helicopter ride if it's available and greenstone carving. Lots of optional activities. Not super physically active but at least we'd walk each day in beautiful areas. Connor arranged a lot of group dinners for us, which were fun and made planning much easier, and also had suggestions for activities (greenstone carving, light hike in Wanaka, walking in an enchanted forest near the hotel in Fox Glacier, sunset cruise in Wanaka, seeing glow worms behind our hotel in Kumara) and restaurants (Hokitika sandwich shop) in each place that we went. I feel like I really saw a lot of the South Island and was able to go to areas that are less accessible unless you rent a car or go with a group tour. Very easy to spend a few days in the bigger cities (Christchurch and Queenstown) before and after the tour and you can explore those cities without needing a guide. I traveled around part of the North Island independently (with a friend and not in a group tour), but I definitely found the small group travel (in this Intrepid group) throughout the South Island much more enjoyable, as it was really fun to share experiences with others in the group. Overall, this was a wonderful experience and I'll definitely travel with Intrepid again.

We have had the best time travelling through NZ, our tour guide has taken all the worry and stress out of this trip and left us to do nothing but enjoy all there is to offer and amazing restaurants and eateries. Accommodation has all been clean, comfortable and catered for everything that we needed. We've learnt so much throughout this tour so much we didn't know about NZs history, fauna and flora. Can't wait for our next adventure thanks to Ann Marie..

An absolute incredible delight across the west coast. Rugged coastlines, dynamic landscapes and key pockets of history trickled throughout. This trip is great for a quick taster! Anne-Marie was really the most amazing guide i’ve had and made this whole trip 10/10.

What a way to see the West coast. Totally unprepared for the beauty we were immersed in. The tour provided so many opportunities to indulge in additional tours. Enough down time to explore on your own. Tour guide Josh was great!

This was an absolutely incredible trip. Our trip leader Grant made the experience more enjoyable by sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm throughout. The stops were absolutely beautiful and I adored Wanaka. I would definitely recommend booking an extra night or two in QueensTown as it was lovely.

The 6 day South Island adventure trip was an excellent way to learn about New Zealand’s wild and beautiful nature, culture, history and geography. Krieg was an excellent tour leader and his expertise on the above was evident on a daily basis. . We visited many places you wouldn’t know about if travelling on your own. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to immerse themselves in NZ South Island.

The tour was amazing. The itinerary was great and my guide, Kreig, was incredible. Saw some amazing sights, and learnt so much about NZ history, culture, geography and more - due to itinerary but mostly due to Kreig who answered every question enthusiastically and went out of his way to make sure everyone had a good time. I will be back with Intrepid, and I would absolutely love to have Kreig as my guide again. He was phenomenal.
