Trip Informations
Challenge yourself to a journey from pretty Porto to the historic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on a 10-day alternative coastal Camino trail. This Portuguese Camino trail passes through coastal Baiona, Vigo and Redondela, and joins the pilgrim route onwards to Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padron, finishing in Santiago de Compostela. You’ll embark on a journey through the countryside in mostly north-western Spain, retracing the ‘Way of Saint James’, trekking past the Bay of Vigo and visiting old churches and quaint villages. As one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages, you’ll take part in a powerful journey through some idyllic landscapes and beautiful towns.
Why you’ll love this trip
Journey this mostly coastal walk to Santiago de Compostela – a lesser-known trail with fewer pilgrims along the way.
Feast on some of the best Spanish seafood and Albarino wine in Arcade, on a substantial lunch stop on the way to Pontevedra.
Trek a fair distance each day, but be able to relax along the way, with a dedicated rest day in Pontevedra.
Take a load off – literally! Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation each day, meaning you’ll only have to carry a day pack, and your luggage will be waiting at your hotel.
Visit one of the local wineries in the region of Caldas de Rei and have the opportunity to soak in the renowned hot springs in the area.
Is this trip right for you?
This is a walking trip. You need to be in good health to complete the walks. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
There are sections on the walk where it will not be possible to call in a taxi or any other transport.
Your main luggage will be transported between stops, but you will still carry a daypack with the essentials, such as water, snacks, a raincoat and so on.
The diversity of the seasons here makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be unpredictable. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year in case conditions change during the day.
While this route is called Portuguese Camino, most of the walking is done on the Spanish territory.
We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage at times, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones.

Having just finished walking from Porto to Santiago de Compostela with Intrepid Travel, I am grateful for the expertise and organisation of our guide Matteo. Whilst at times it was physically and mentally challenging, I could start every day knowing that everything was taken care of to ensure a safe pilgrimage. I couldn’t have done it on my own.

This was a great, well organized trip. The Portuguese Camino obviously involved a lot of walking so having stops an accommodation planned for us was a welcome addition.

This trip was another great Intrepid adventure. Our group was amazing, and our leader Pili, did an outstanding job of managing the variety of ages, abilities, preferences, and needs. The camino is a special experience, and I am so pleased with how it all came together between our fabulous group and leader, the community of pilgrims along the way, and the logistics Intrepid provided. Well done.

Pilar made our Portuguese Camino effortless and enriching. Her organization meant we never had to think about logistics, only enjoy the walk. She checked on everyone throughout the day, shared meaningful history, and created a warm atmosphere among like‑minded travelers. The journey felt smooth, supported, and unforgettable.

Wow. I don't know if I've ever had a trip that's changed me like this one. The bond we built with the other pilgrims and our trip leader was so special. We all learned to love every step of this journey, not just the destination. This is such a unique opportunity to see Spain in a slow way, and really see how small town life is. I definitely was emotional throughout the trip, as my grandfather left Gallicia to go to the United States to give more opportunities for future generations. Until the trip I didn't realize he sacrificed an amazing life here for the rest of us. Armando our leader was one of the most amazing humans I've ever met, always supporting local businesses and families. If you're thinking about doing this, sign up today. You will only regret if you don't

We had a wonderful time walking the Portuguese Camino. Beautiful scenery and we were also blessed with great weather. Our guide Ainhoa was fantastic. She was informative, organised and also very keen to share all of Galicia’s culinary delights with us too.
