Trip Informations
Explore southern India on this 15-day adventure through lush lands and small villages. Beneath the green shade of a coastal paradise, you’ll meet with locals in their fishing villages and join them in bazaars, on buses and boats and for a home-cooked meal with a host family in Kerala. Watch the landscape transform from coast and tea country to the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats. Visit cultural sites like the Maharaja's Palace in Mysore, witness a traditional performance of Kathakali in Kochi and explore French-influenced Puducherry and the vast landscape of Periyar. Southern India's spirituality, national parks and the warm people make it a fascinating and enriching place to explore.
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore the waterfalls, tea plantations and spice markets of southern India’s Western Ghats – a jungle-clad mountain range older than the Himalayas and one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.
Step back in time among the hills of the British ‘Snooty Ooty’ and take in countryside views along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
Search for elusive wildlife, including elephants, sloth bears and rare birds on a safari around one of the best places in India to observe nature up close – Periyar National Park.
Go on a punt boat ride through the Kerala backwaters, taking in the tranquil scenery. Then, be welcomed into a local family home in an island village.
Get a taste of regional life, cuisine and hospitality when you share home-cooked meals with local families in Mysore, Periyar and the Kerala backwaters.
Is this trip right for you?
This trip is packed full of sights and experiences. This means extensive travel and several single-night stays, allowing you to experience as much as possible in two weeks.
This trip uses a variety of transport options, including trains and buses, for journeys of up to 11 hours. There is also an overnight sleeper train from Mysore to Mamallapuram, so be sure to have a book, some podcasts and your best travel games ready.
Sleeper trains are a quintessential Indian travel experience. They’re a great way to travel long distances and maximise your time in each place. You’ll be travelling alongside locals, as well as Tuuur travellers, in a compartment of mixed genders. You’ll find more details about the experience in the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information, or you can read more about it here: https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/ https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/ (https://www.tuuur.com/adventures/india-trains-guide/)
In the Western Ghats, it can be surprisingly cool at night, especially in winter. Check weather reports in advance to help with your packing and remember to bring modest clothing (i.e. pants or skirts that go below the knees and tops that cover your arms) for your visits to religious sites.
We've sourced our accommodation carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Tuuur style of travel. Service and accommodation in India may be different from Western standards.

I recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see south of India. It’s the most comprehensive insight to the area. And it is totally different from the north of the country.

The Intrepid South India itinerary, destinations and experiences are absolutely brilliant. I loved every place we visited and there are too many highlights to single one out. Our leader Sree worked very hard to deliver fantastic opportunities for us and organising a houseboat trip instead of taking the bus all day on our second last day was phenomenal. I appreciated his initiative. The people in southern India are so welcoming and friendly. This trip was a wonderful way to finish nearly 4 months in India. I loved all 6 Intrepid trips taken from 24/12-25 to 16/4/26. Feeling very grateful for all the experiences. Congratulations Intrepid team - you are amazing!!!

Intrepid Southern India trip provides an exciting itinerary visiting major sites in the south. The destinations include a mixture of cities with temples, museums and palaces, and National Parks and upland tea plantations in the western ghats. Methods of travel involved rickshaws, minibuses, overnight sleeper train, narrow gauge mountain train, safari bus and various boats, all adding to the fun of the trip. Our local leader Abhi was amazing, with excellent organizational skills, making sure we were all well and happy, and providing lots of interesting information on Indian culture. An excellent introduction to Southern India!
